How do you communicate the identity of a school through a single visual element?
The real challenge was to design a communication system capable of supporting the school’s events while expressing its values through one consistent visual language.
A project born in the workshop
The idea took shape during my years at IIS Scotton, following a proposal from our workshop teacher.
Many of our activities went beyond traditional classroom exercises and became projects intended to leave something meaningful behind for the school. This was one of them.
The brief was to design a modular backdrop that could become part of the school’s visual identity during concerts, conferences, and public events.
Building a visual language
Before designing the panels, we designed the message.
The goal was to create a composition that would go beyond decoration and tell the story of the school through symbols, words, and visual connections.
The backdrop was designed to be discovered gradually. By following the graphic composition, viewers moved through ideas related to creativity, communication, personal growth, and collaboration, eventually forming a complete understanding of the school’s identity.
Two hemispheres, one message
The composition was built around two main areas.
The left hemisphere represented the support the school offers its students: overcoming challenges, believing in their potential, and growing within a community.
The right hemisphere focused on the school’s approach: thinking, communicating, challenging conventions, and building one’s future. Two different yet complementary perspectives brought together within the same visual journey.
From concept to production
Once the concept had been defined, production began.
The structure consisted of three modular panels covered in black fabric. Every graphic element was applied by hand using the workshop’s heat press, following the design developed during the concept phase.
Each symbol required precision, careful alignment, and continuous adjustments to preserve the balance of the overall composition.
A collaborative effort
The project involved a group of students, each contributing in a different role.
Alongside the graphic design work, I was responsible for coordinating part of the production process, organizing the workflow through to the final installation.
It became a project where design, production, and collaboration evolved together.
A communication system for every event
The final outcome was more than a backdrop.
It was a communication system designed to adapt to concerts, performances, and public events while maintaining a consistent visual identity.
A project created to accompany the school’s activities without ever losing its meaning.
Beyond the final result
Looking back at this project today, what I still find most interesting is not only the backdrop itself, but the process that made it possible.
An idea born from a real need, developed through a clear concept, transformed into a visual language, and brought to life through the shared work of a team.
That balance between communication, design, and production remains, even today, the most meaningful aspect of the project.
